Nobody wants pests in the house, except perhaps the pest control company who gets paid to eliminate the pests for you!
Of course, in most cases people don’t realize there is a pest issue until it has become serious, this is because the pests remain hidden. By the time you see them walking around or find the damage they’ve caused, it’s a full-on infestation.
But, there is an effective way to eliminate this issue or reduce the risk of pest invasions, it simply involves landscaping your garden to prevent pests:
Keep The Grass Short
Most pests don’t like short grass as it gives them very few places to hide. By keeping the grass short you’ll be able to minimize the pests that make it to your home, you’ll also find it easier to see them.
Plant Well
Certain plants, such as lavender, ginger, lemon, basil, and even garlic, are natural deterrents for many flying insects, including mosquitoes. By planting a border of them near your home you’ll reduce the number of insects that want to go inside your home.
But, you can also take a look at all the plants in your garden to see how many of them allow water to collect on their leaves. Standing water draws mosquitoes which may their eggs in the water. By getting rid of the plants that allow water to collect you’ll be reducing your risk of mosquito invasion.
Drainage
When landscaping it is important to consider the drainage, you need water to flow away from your house. This decreases the likelihood of water getting into any part of your home and ensures there are no puddles to attract mosquitoes and other pests.
Shading Your Grass
A little shade is nice on a hot day but, shade stops grass from drying properly. This gives way to moisture retention and an increased likelihood of pests. Keep the shade over your entertainment area and minimize shade on your grass, it will reduce the threat of pests.
Lighting
Having an array of outside lights in place can help your home to look fantastic. However, it doesn’t just look good to you, it will also look good to a host of pests.
Turn the lights off when you don’t need them on and change the bulbs to insect-resistant yellow ones, this will help to minimize the number of pests attracted to your home.
Edge Your Home
This may have been done when your home was built but, if it isn’t, you can do it now. Simply put between 6” and 12” of concrete around your home. You can even go wider and create a walkway around your house.
The concrete stops insects and particularly termites, from being able to bury into your foundations and attack your wood.
It also helps with drainage and keeping the house looking tidy.
