Your gums and teeth can remain healthy throughout your life with proper care. This is because the healthier you keep your gums and teeth, the lower the risks of gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing can help prevent gum diseases by using an electric toothbrush or the regular one. Here are some of the few habits that you should adapt to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Eat the right foods
Whatever goes in will show up on your teeth. Drinking black tea, red wine, or even smoking cigarettes will not help in keeping your gums healthy and your teeth pearly white. Foods that contain sugars and starch produce a lot of acid and the longer they stay in your mouth, the more the damage to your teeth. This is why candy, snacks, and sugary foods lead to tooth decay as most people won’t brush after snacking.
It’s also important to avoid tooth fractures by avoiding crunching hard at hard edibles like ice and candy. This is because tiny fractures in your teeth will over the years make the teeth more fragile and susceptible to tooth fractures.
Flossing on a daily basis
Flossing once a day helps removes food and plaque between your teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach. The accumulation of plaque could lead to the formation of tartar, which needs to be taken care of by a dentist. However, you should always take care while flossing not to injure your gums.
Brushing your teeth
If you can, always brush after every meal, but make sure that you brush no less than twice a day. Brushing helps remove plaque, which usually interacts with food particles to produce acids which may cause cavities. A soft toothbrush is suitable for this. For best results, it is advised that one brushes for at least two minutes for both the normal and electric toothbrush.
Moreover, it is recommended that you place the toothbrush at a 45 degree slant position when brushing against your gums, and then gently move the brush in a circular motion. Brushing with great force does not qualify as the best way to remove plaque.
Always remember to clean your tongue properly as well. This helps kill bacteria and keep your breath fresh. You should also rinse your mouth properly after brushing, and always replace your toothbrush after a period of three to four months.
