For many passionate ice cream aficionados, both gelato and traditional ice cream hold special places in their hearts. Traditional ice cream is made with heavy cream, and is a delicious comfort food. However, its lighter cousin gelato is a lower fat option that is incredibly easy on the taste buds; it doesn’t leave the same thick coating in the mouth that traditional ice cream does. The great ice cream debate varies from region to region, making one more popular than the other in some areas.
Why Is Gelato Gaining Popularity?
Gelato products are made with more milk than cream, making it lighter and crisper. The delicious flavors seem to be much easier to taste, as there is not a lot of heavy cream to confuse and block the taste buds. This delicious Italian-inspired ice cream is lighter on the calories as well, making it a popular choice with those who are watching what they eat. Gelato is slightly more expensive though, and is considered more of a “gourmet” option. This type of ice cream would be excellent in a boutique-styled gourmet treat shop.
The Affordability of Traditional Ice Cream
Perhaps the biggest deciding factor for the masses in this ice cream debate is the price. Your typical pint or quart of ice cream is fairly affordable, making it a treat for the whole family that won’t break the bank. This is where regular ice cream blasts right past gelato, winning the majority of the audience. Shops that choose to go with traditional ice cream can rely on a steadier stream of visitors, as most people are well acquainted with traditional ice cream. There are still many people who have not tried gelato, so a “gelato shop” might not seem as appealing for them.
Having the Best of Both Worlds
Another option is to carry both ice cream and gelato for customers. This will require more ice cream shop supplies, more varieties of ice cream, and a decent flow of traffic. Having so many different varieties of ice cream could be wasteful in the end if there is only a trickle of visitors. For shops in high traffic areas, offering the largest selection of fine frozen desserts could result in a large, loyal customer base.
Ice cream shops are a must-have attraction in every city. Children everywhere are dying to try every flavor, while every grandparent treasures the ability to reminisce with their own grandchildren. Whether it’s gelato or ice cream, it is all a delicious treat to be enjoyed and admired.

I’d say I’m one of those who haven’t tried gelato. But here in Cagayan de Oro, Missy Bon Bon has been gaining reputation when it comes to gelato products. I always forget to try theirs whenever I get to pass by their shop. Will have to tag my friends for a gelato tripping. 🙂
