Confirming how the young users have totally embraced the Internet as a way to communicate and find entertainment, search terms focusing on social-networking sites, music, shows, shopping sites, and celebrities topped the list of the most searched by boys and girls aged from 7 to 18. YouTube, Facebook and Google are particularly consistent. One cause of concern however is the consistency as well of sex and porn among the most searched items.
This emphasizes the need to better regulate the use of the Internet especially among the young. Since the information available through this medium is easily available to anyone, there is nothing to prevent unscrupulous sites from corrupting the minds of a very curious and eager group of viewers. The advantage of ready information from the Internet can likewise work to the disadvantage of many.
Efforts have been exerted towards protecting the young by certain procedures that involve getting the permission of the parents before a minor child can participate in activities of particular websites. However, websites who usually take these efforts are not exactly the problem since they generally conform to certain ethical standards. The problem lies with sites that flourish mainly because of their questionable nature, victimizing the innocent and not so innocent along the way. Even in seemingly harmless social network sites, a certain degree of danger is presented when children are left unguarded. Protection of the children in Internet use still remains a primary concern.
